Our lives changed forever on June 9th, 2008. On this day, Bernie passed away in a work related accident. In one last act of good-natured ribbing, Dad called down from the roof of Zinpro and proclaimed “Guess where I’m at? I’m halfway to heaven.” This “Halfway to Heaven” adage has become a source of unity and strength for our family.
"The Music is All Around Us. All You Have to Do is Listen."

Music was one of Bernie's greatest passions. He had a beautiful singing voice which he used to worship God and bring comfort and joy to people all over the state of Iowa.
For 10 years, Bernie traveled around Iowa singing in the gospel quartet "Free Spirit." Along with Marilyn Janssen, Jim & Diana Suntken, and Janet Pals, Bernie brought the word of God to countless people through music.
On June 14th, 2008 friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of Bernie. At the funeral, several of Bernie's friends sang in a choir directed by Bernie & Bambi's eldest son, Tyler.
